MTN Nigeria, Globacom and Airtel Nigeria met the deadline for the payment of NGN 647.5 million in fines imposed by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for poor service quality on their networks, ThisDay reported. NCC Public Relations Manager Reuben Muoka said the NCC received NGN 647.5 million on 07 March. The NCC also banned the three operators from selling SIM cards on their networks for a month effective 01 March.
The commission stated that it would carry out an audit of the three companies on 01 March and also on 31 March to ensure that no new SIM cards had been sold. The chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecoms Operators of Nigeria (ALTON),Gbenga Adebayo, said continuous fines from the NCC would not solve the challenge of poor service quality, but would rather aggravate the situation. He said the regulator was not interested in addressing the issues that were giving rise to poor service quality.
