The integrity of the glaciers in the Amundsen Sea has been affected by the numerous geographic peculiarities and by the warm ocean currents. As a result, they are melting faster than anticipated and it seems that this situation is unstoppable as Eric Rignot, the NASA glaciologist, declared.
NASA also reported that if the entire portion of Antarctica’s ice will melt, the sea levels will rise by up to 4 feet. Rignot added that this process can take several centuries.
Professor Sridhar Anandakrishnan from Pennsylvania State University declared that we could also see some effects of the melting in this century. According to the climate change report released by the United Nations the sea levels can increase by up to 3 feet until the end of 2100. If this happens, tens of millions of individuals living in coastal areas will have to be displaced.
